Enamel Portrait Miniature by Christian Friedrich
Zincke (1683-1767)
Christian Friedrich Zincke is widely credited with bringing the technique
of enamelling portrait miniatures to Britain during Queen Anne's reign.
It is an incredibly skilful process whereby each colour, made of powdered
glass, is fired separately at different temperatures. The resultant
portraits are extraordinarily durable; the colours in our portrait of
this unknown - almost certainly aristocratic - child are as vivid today
as they were 300 years ago when they were first created. Zincke's work
is widely admired and examples can be found in the National Portrait
Gallery, the Gilbert collection at Somerset House and the Metropolitan
Museum of Art.
