Chinese Chippendale Gainsborough
Armchair
It has become difficult to find well-preserved examples of that staple
item, the Georgian Library chair. We have one fine specimen, with a
humped back (thus earning it the soubriquet ‘Gainsborough’),
nicely curved arms, well-raked back legs and overall generous proportions.
The polished show-wood on the arms and legs is all decorated with blind-fret
lozenges of the type made popular by Thomas Chippendales ‘Chinese’
designs. Interestingly, the stretchers between the legs are not in an
‘H’ configuration but in a ‘U’ and are elegantly
shaped. |
