Pocket Sextant by Alexander Adie

Dating from 1840, this pocket sextant is a classic example of Alexander Adie’s talent for taking a nautical instrument and domesticating it.

This functional but beautifully crafted object is about the size of a small tin of baked beans, the brass case unscrewing and reversing so that the works are planted on the inverted lid, which is held in the upturned hand. It performs all the functions of its full-sized brother, courtesy of an amazingly engraved angular scale, scanned by means of a captive magnifying glass.
