Adie Stick Barometer
A few years ago, we sold a very unusual ‘lighthouse’ barometer
by Alexander Adie, celebrated Edinburgh instrument maker.
We now have for sale another stick barometer from the same stylistic
family, made c.1840, at which time the firm was known as ‘Adie
& Son’. Like the original, this example has an ultra-slim
mahogany trunk, which does not widen at the top like most sticks but,
unlike the first, it has a rounded rather than a square top. The exposed
tube has a wooden sheath round it and an unusual lobed rectangular cistern
cover.
It is an exceptionally elegant piece of domestic decoration.
